The Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) is delighted to announce that Kojo Boakye has been appointed Deputy Director of A4AI, effective immediately. Kojo steps into this newly-created role from his current position as A4AI’s policy manager. As Deputy Director, he will continue to spearhead A4AI’s policy work, while taking an active role alongside A4AI’s Executive Director Sonia Jorge on international advocacy efforts, strengthening partnerships at the national and regional levels, and overseeing the operations of the Alliance’s national coalitions.
An experienced ICT for Development practitioner, Boakye has over a decade’s experience working with Governments, fixed-line and mobile operators, and development partners, on complex issues such as strategic planning, infrastructure sharing, taxation, spectrum policy and the diffusion of mobile devices. He joined A4AI in November 2013, a few weeks after our official launch, and has been instrumental in the success of the Alliance to date. Kojo’s achievements include playing a major role in establishing A4AI’s multistakeholder coalitions in Nigeria, Ghana, Myanmar, the Dominican Republic and Mozambique, representing the Alliance on speaking platforms around the globe, producing the annual affordability report and overseeing the production of A4AI’s influential country case studies.
Sonia Jorge said:
“Kojo has been an incredible force in the development of A4AI. In a little over 18 months since our launch, A4AI has doubled membership and forged successful partnerships with five member countries – already leading to positive policy change in two. Kojo’s dedication and commitment to our mission and vision have been instrumental to this early success and I am excited to share the leadership of A4AI with such a talented colleague.”
Kojo Boakye added:
“A4AI is already working to drive down access prices for over 300m people in five countries across three continents. Despite early gains, our work remains urgent. 60% of the world’s people still can’t get online, usually because it is unaffordable. Smart policy and effective regulation can change this, fast, and I’m excited to play an even larger role in this vital work as A4AI’s new deputy director.”
